Ally
McBeal
First time I ever heard of this t.v. series was
during the telecast of the Golden Globe and Calista Flockhart went up the
stage to collect her award. I thought then: “My, she certainly looks
familiar!” It was later then that I learned she was the same girl
who played the fiance in the Birdcage. Two weeks later, just when
I thought my Thursday nights were going down the drain with the last episode
of “e.r.” (1996-1997 season), Ally McBeal hit the Singapore t.v. screens
with the first episode and I found myself hooked since then. I’ve
so far missed out only on two episodes of the 1st season and I am looking
forward to the new season.
Backgrounder
Ally McBeal is a 27-year old lawyer, who works
in a law firm in Boston. Ally was voted most likely to be “Julie
Andrews” back in her high school days which she thoroughly resents.
Armed with a wild, and I mean wild, imagination, she has a knack for finding
herself in the most embarrassing situations. She’s very insecure,
except in the courtroom, and emotional.
On her way out, after quitting her job from this
prominent law firm because she was sexually harassed by a senior associate,
she meets Richard Fish, who was one of Ally's classmates when they were
at Harvard. He offers her a job at his law firm that he recently started.
Richard’s favorite expression is “Bygones”, has his own set of out-of-this-world
philosophy referred to in the show as “Fishism” and has a fetish for touching
women’s wattles.
Ally finds out on her first day at work that
her ex-boyfriend Billy Thomas also works in the same firm and that is now
married to Georgia, who is also a lawyer. The couple goes through
a lot of trials in their marriage brought about Ally’s constant presence
in their lives. There is no doubt that Billy loves Georgia very much but
somehow a part of him is still emotionally attached to Ally.
Elaine is Ally’s busybody assistant who strives
for the attention of the crowd and loves to stick her nose into everybody’s
business. Perhaps the best lawyer in the law firm is John Cage or
“The Biscuit”. As the other partner of the firm, he likes to “take
a moment” and his unorthodox ways ingenuously throw the people around him
off-balance. He is into “smile therapy” and flushes the toilet bowl
with a remote control before he enters their Unisex Washroom because he
likes his toilet bowl fresh among many other weird habits. Renee
shares a flat with Ally and surprise, surprise ~ she works
in the D.A.’s office as Assistant District Attorney. She tends to
be a bit wild, knows her way around men and has a great singing voice.
There are also recurring roles such as Vonda Shepphard
as their in-house singer in the pub they hang out after work. Another
permanent fixture in the show as well as in the pub, are the Dancing Twins.
Tracy Ullman has appeared in the show as John Cage’s shrink whom he recommended
to Ally; Dyan Cannon as Whipper, the judge who Richard was seriously dating
for some time; the Dancing baby in diapers that appears to Ally.
What I like about the show
Well for one thing, the songs in the series are
good. The different characters in the show are refreshing, albeit
some of them are a little eccentric to the point of being weird but then
I guess that is what makes them special. The cases they handle are
somehow uncommon and even bizarre at times but the writers seem to be able
to come up with the viable closing arguments for their courtroom scenes
that would bring down the jury and the t.v. viewers.
And there’s the proverbial “BUT”
I do understand the awkwardness of the situation
with Ally, Georgia and Billy in the same work place. BUT since the writers
have already made it for Ally and Georgia to seemingly like each other
enough to co-exist together in Billy’s life, I hope Ally would stop reacting
absurdly stupid to everything that concerns the couple. Just let
it go, they should have accepted the situation by now and it’s time for
all to move on. Sure I like Ally’s quirkiness and penchant for shooting
off like a machine gun when she’s agitated but maybe they should mellow
it down a bit.
